Hey everyone! This weeks treat is going to be a little different because it is homemade! Personally, I think homemade baked goods are always the best.
This week’s treat was made by my group for a class at school. Our cake theme is formally known as “I lost my heart in San Francisco”. Note that the plane banner says “Go Giants”. The cake itself is not made from a box, but from a grandmother’s recipe. We used tubbed buttercream frosting for the dirty icing layer, and the outer layer is made using a buttercream recipe from foodnetwork.com, which I will include on the bottom. We also dyed the icing in several different colors such as blue, teal, and purple for extra fun.
Fondant was used for the plane, the cityscape, and the stars. The fondant was bought in a package, and we dyed them different colors and flavored it with vanilla extract. Personally though, I think fondant is yucky, but it looks nice on cakes!
The cake flavor was vanilla yellow cake that was actually made up. Unfortunately, I do not have the recipe with me right now, but I will post it soon! My next post will hopefully be the recipe for my cake and a review for the recipe. Stay tuned in!
Oh, here’s the buttercream frosting recipe… before I forget about it!
Quick Vanilla Buttercream Frosting
YIELDS: 10-12 seervings
TIME: 12 minutes
- 3 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 1 cup butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 to 2 tablespoons whipping cream
In a standing mixer fitted with a whisk, mix together sugar and butter. Mix on low speed until well blended and then increase speed to medium and beat for another 3 minutes.
Add vanilla and cream and continue to beat on medium speed for 1 minute more, adding more cream if needed for spreading consistency.
